Kojic acid

Kojic acid (5-hydroxy-2-hydroxymethyl-1,4-pyrone) is a weakly acidic organic compound produced by microbial fermentation. High-grade kojic acid appears as off-white to yellowish needle-like crystals. It is readily soluble in water, alcohol and acetone, slightly soluble in ether, ethyl acetate, chloroform and pyridine, and insoluble in benzene. Molecular formula: C6H6O4; molecular weight: 142.1; melting point: 153-156 deg C. CAS: 501-30-4.

Applications:
(1) Cosmetics: Tyrosine is converted into melanin through complex oxidation and polymerization reactions catalyzed by tyrosinase in the presence of oxygen free radicals. Kojic acid inhibits tyrosinase activity and is safe and non-toxic; it is therefore formulated into lotions, face masks, emulsions and creams. At a concentration of 20 ug/ml, kojic acid inhibits 70-80% of the activity of various tyrosinases (also known as polyphenol oxidase, PPO). The recommended dosage in cosmetics is 0.2-1.0%.
(2) Kojic acid is a raw material for the production of maltol and ethyl maltol.
(3) In the pharmaceutical field, since kojic acid has no mutagenic effect on eukaryotic cells and can scavenge free radicals in the human body, it is used as a raw material for cephalosporin antibiotics.
(4) In agriculture, kojic acid can be used to produce biological pesticides. A bio-microfertilizer (dark red liquid) prepared with 0.5-1.0% kojic acid is widely used as a crop growth promoter, whether sprayed as a foliar fertilizer at low concentration or applied to the roots as a growth and yield enhancer.
(5) In other fields, kojic acid also serves as an iron analysis reagent and a photographic film stain remover.

Storage: store in a ventilated, dry and dark place. Shelf life: 3 years.
